Precautions to be taken during carriage of coal -

1. Daily checks for temperature and gases (Methane, Oxygen and Carbon Monoxide)
2. Surface ventilation shall be carried out for - carrying away of the methane gas and dissipate any heat formed by the oxidation of the coal
3. Never carry out thorough ventilation of coal
4. Temperature shall be monitored at 3 levels every day. If temperature of cargo is near 55 degrees and showing rising tendency existence of fire shall be suspected. Cargo spaces to be shut down and sealed against entry of air. Master to seek expert advise
5. All electrical cables and components situated in cargo should be free from defects and suitable for use in such atmosphere
6. In case the combustion is confirmed all cargo spaces to be shut and boundary cooling to be started
7. Precautions shall be take to prevent any water ingress
8. Bilges shall be sounded and pumped out regularly
