1. Testing shall be done by a Competent person
2. Ship's Stability should be adequate and testing of derricks shall not compromise the stability of the vessel
3. Cranes / derricks shall be tested with its boom at minimum angle (check test certificate)
4. Test load to be applied by movable weights
5. After loading - boom should be swung as far as practicable in both direction port and starboard
6. Cranes to be tested at maximum, minimum and intermediate radius points
7. Tests shall include hoisting, lowering, braking and swinging through all positions cut off and limit switches shall be checked
8. Machinery shall be tested by operating it at maximum speed
9. All tests, for newer ships, to be carried out by dead weights
10. Spring balance, if used, should have an accuracy of +/- 2% and test should be for 5 minutes
11. After testing, appliance and loose gears to be thoroughly examined for deformation
