What are the limitations of ECDIS?

Contd....
1. Ecdis works on electrical power source and any disruption to power source could render the ECDIS useless.
2. ECDIS uses input from equipments such as GPS, GYRO and hence any default in the input will compromise the accuracy of position fixing on ECDIS

An additional limitation of ECDIS is the NON-STANDARDIZATION of the ECDIS across various manufacturers.

Limitations of ECDIS may include -

1. Lack of ENC Coverage areas which may still require Paper Chart to navigate safely
2. Some information which can be obtained directly from Paper Charts, requires referral to publications (additional sources information) while using ECDIS. An example of such situations could be tidal levels / tidal streams values which could be directly picked up from Paper charts
3. Many symbols on ECDIS appear differently from their counterparts on the Paper Charts which may require frequent referral to the catalogue (especially for officers making a switch from paper charts to ECDIS)
